Thoughts on Mossberg 500 12 gauge?

Saw one at the gun store today and it sure looked nice. I had a tragic accident where I lost both of my handguns and all of my ammo, so I need to replace those.

What's a good price for one of these bad boys and what do people think of it?

I have an 8 shot Persuader model. It came with an added heatshield and tritium front site. I like it alot. It's mainly for home defense ,of course. 20" barrel is about as long as I'd want for that purpose. I think this might actually be the best for this purpose because of the "elevator" that stays in the UP position as you load shells to keep you from getting your fingers pinched. The Remington doesn't have this feature.

The one I looked at had a Persuader/Cruiser label on it and a picture of an LEO. They had it for $299.99 plus tax. I am not sure if that is a good price or not but the nice thing is it's cash and carry since it's not a handgun. I'll shop around online though.

It also has certain mechanical design advantages over the higher priced Remmington 870.

I don't know about up your way, but they're starting to get kind of scarce around here. You might want to make up your mind quickly whether you want it or not! I just bought a Mossberg 930 12 gauge, though not primarily as a home defense weapon. I noticed neither of my regular gun shops had any 500s of any model left in stock. (Btw, I didn't see any Remington 870s at either shop, either, but I didn't ask, and they might have had some stock that wasn't on the floor.)

I think that may not be a bad price. Does your dealer offer a Model 590? The 590 has a 9-shot capacity and ghost ring sights.

They only had two left that I saw. I need to go back and verify that it is new and not used, and then maybe go ahead and buy it. It sounds like it's a good deal so maybe I should take both? :bear_w00t:

That 590 is a bad boy.

Parkerized, ghost ring site, 9 rounds.

Bud's Guns had some that were extras from an order for the Kentucky State Police but they are all gone now.

They were priced around $485 IIRC.

I have a Remington 870 Marine Magnum [among others] but I still lust after a 590.

They are having a gun show in Waukesha this weekend. There is a guy who sets up in the back room by the food stand who sells Mossburg persuaders (I think that is the model) For $275 OTD. 8 shot ,pistol grip, heat shield, parkerized finish. Usually has a whole stack of boxes. I bought 1 last show...good deal...nice gun.

I bought a used 500 at a pawnshop about 8 years ago it came with a slug barrel and a long barrel. I have been very happy with it. No problems to date and I shot it often, it sits by the bed with 00 Buck in it.

Re: Thoughts on Mossberg 500 12 gauge?

Recently picked up an 870 because it was there on front of me. I'd read the side-by-sides that make a good case for the 500. They are right; the 870 safety is a whore and the chamber release is on the wrong side for me. Still loving the 870 but will grab a 500 if one of those decides to look me in the face at a good price. FWIW, my 870 came with 18" barrel, extended magazine and folding stock with shell holder under $400. Just needs surefire lighted forend to be complete, will also get a wooden stock/forend and 27" barrel for hunting as the budget allows.

No, I'm a flatlander. I live just south of the Stateline (The Cheddar Curtain!). I spend a lot of my time north of the border, especially when shopping, 2% less sales tax. All my friends live in WI. Thinking about it now, I wish I'd bought my house in WI. I just kept thinking about the much larger income and property taxes in WI and didn't think about the stupid firearm laws in IL. Pre red pill days...

Yeah, I hear you on that. But you have to admit, we've been spoiled by about 8 years of mild winters. There were a couple that I didn't fire up the snowblower. This one is a butt-kicker, though!
